Several weeks ago, I presented a tasting of Patrón’s premium tequilas, and first—as I always do—I checked the brand’s website to see if they have any interesting “signature” cocktails I can use in tastings. They do. Credit where credit is due: Patrón is pricey, but they offer a raft of exciting cocktail recipes in addition to good tequila. Just go to the Patrón website and click on “Cocktail Lab.”

The “Bee Positive” is straight from that site. It’s a delicious recipe that capitalizes on fresh cherry tomatoes, which are coming into season right now in northern latitudes of the United States. The drink hits me as a Mexican Bloody Mary, marrying tequila with fresh lime juice, herbs and spices from Green Chartreuse, and sweetness from rich honey syrup. 

BEE POSITIVE
1½ oz Patrón Añejo Tequila (or similar)
½ oz Green Chartreuse
½ oz Freshly squeezed lime juice
1 tsp Honey syrup (3 parts honey to one part water)
7 Cherry tomatoes, plus 2 or 3 for garnish

Muddle the cherry tomatoes, honey, and lime juice in the base of a shaker. (Watch this video to learn more about muddling.) Add the tequila and Chartreuse, then fill the shaker two-thirds full with ice. Shake for 15 seconds to chill well, and fine-strain (to keep tomato solids out of the drink) into a chilled cocktail coupe. Grind fresh black pepper over the drink and garnish with a skewer of cherry tomatoes and an orange twist.
