Golden Dawn

The name of this drink seems fitting for a New Year’s Day. I haven’t mixed it since last summer, when the weather was warm enough here to enjoy it on our patio. (Of note, I don’t know why someone named this a “dawn” drink. It looks more like sunset to me … but I quibble.)

Guess what? It tastes every bit as good indoors on a Western New York winter evening—possibly even better for summoning the memory (and anticipation) of warm afternoons outdoors.

Happy New Year!

GOLDEN DAWN
¾ oz London Dry Gin
1 oz Calvados
1 oz Apricot brandy liqueur
1 oz Freshly squeezed orange juice
2 dashes Angostura bitters
1 tsp Grenadine syrup

Shake the first five ingredients with ice and fine-strain the mix into chilled Martini glass. Carefully and slowly, POUR the grenadine into the center of the drink, allowing it to settle and create the sunrise effect (consider this a lab exercise on the topic of specific gravity). Garnish with an orange zest twist.

Now, before you buy a bottle of grenadine at a store, I suggest reading a previous Libation Lounge post on the subject.
