Seminar Description:
Using a selection of vermouths available at Pinnacle Wine & Liquor for illustration, this seminar will review the history and evolution of vermouth—what it is, where it came from, how it’s made, the variety of styles available today, and how to use them. We’ll taste the full range of styles, and attendees will take away a list of vermouth-centered cocktail recipes for further exploration at home.
The back story:
Since World War II, vermouth has probably been the most misunderstood, under-appreciated, and even disrespected beverage on the American cocktail scene—widely considered most useful for ruining Martinis. Winston Churchill famously opined, “I would like to observe the vermouth from across the room while I drink my Martini.”
However, before Prohibition and a global war disrupted cocktail culture, vermouths were fashionable aperitifs, and vermouth was often the featured ingredient in cocktails instead of a supporting actor. Good news: Vermouths are having a moment and regaining their rightful place in classy saloons and home bars alike. Across the category, modern vermouths are pleasingly affordable, immensely useful, and—best of all—delicious to enjoy neat or in easy-to-make cocktails.
