Nigori Sake Cocktail: Melting Snow

As presented, this recipe makes a very petite cocktail (two ounces plus a teaspoon of ingredients), which will appear under-sized in a standard old-fashioned glass (I used a small glass for the one in the photo), so doubling it would be a fine idea. I chose Rihaku’s Dreamy Clouds nigori sake for this version, but feel free to use whatever you like. Lastly, if you want the best-tasting grenadine possible, I recommend making it yourself, but a store-bought product should suffice for appearances.

1 oz Nigori sake (Rihaku Dreamy Clouds)
½ oz Cointreau, Grand Marnier, or other Cognac-based orange liqueur
½ oz Freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 tsp Grenadine syrup

Add all ingredients (except grenadine syrup) to a cocktail shaker and shake gently with ice. Strain into a salt-rimmed old-fashioned glass. Gently add the grenadine syrup, allowing it to settle to the bottom of the drink. Carefully add one large ice cube, without disturbing the grenadine, and serve.
