“You are what you drink.” Or is it, “you drink what you are?” In the instant case, either would make me old, tart, and full of medicine.
Pretty close to the mark.
I’m one of the minority of humans fortunate enough to have made a living sitting on my brains and bandying words for hire. It was so much fun that I still bandy words, but for free and about topics far more pleasing than anyone ever paid me to cover.
Anyway, this is a very well balanced and easily made cocktail calling for equal parts of four ingredients, which helps immensely when you decide you want a second one. The sweetness in the rum and Luxardo liqueur balance the tartness of the lime perfectly while leaving it refreshing, and the normally medicinal Green Chartreuse adds a delicious vegetal touch. (I know—some of my friends can’t get Chartreuse past their noses, but trust me on this one: You barely know it’s in there, the drink blends so well.)
WORDSMITH
¾ oz Overproof, aged pot still rum (I used Foursquare’s Empery)
¾ oz Green Chartreuse liqueur
¾ oz Luxardo Maraschino liqueur
¾ oz Freshly squeezed lime juice
Combine all the ingredients in a shaker with plenty of ice and shake until your fingers hurt from the cold. Fine strain the mix into a chilled stemmer (that’s a Nick and Nora in the photo), and garnish with a twist of lime zest.
