Found this recipe while looking for cocktails to help use the temporary surplus of fresh grapefruit juice I have before it goes bad.
Couldn’t wait to get my two lips on it, of course. <rimshot> It is absolutely delicious and refreshing.
Of note, the recipe as presented on liquor.com called for no garnish at all, and I always follow directions. I’m a by-the-book kinda guy. The drink is as citrusy as you’d expect from looking at the recipe. Lime and grapefruit seem like a sour combination, but that’s why there’s a good dollop of simple syrup in there, and the maraschino liqueur helps balance the citrus, too.
Since the gin is well under half of this drink—especially after the ice melt adds the usual ounce-ish of water—I recommend using a Navy-strength gin (57% alcohol by volume, give or take a little), and Sipsmith’s VJOP has strength of flavor that carries well in this much dilution. Hayman’s Royal Dock is another good gin for a drink like this.
DORCHESTER
1½ oz High-proof gin (e.g., Sipsmith VJOP)
½ oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
¾ oz Freshly squeezed lime juice
½ oz Freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
½ oz Simple syrup
Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled coupe. Optional garnish: Lime wheel or grapefruit peel.
